We were warmly welcomed by the friendly owner of this pretty 18th century pub. Our bedrooms were comfortable and spacious, with plenty of charging points, generous bath sheets, an excellent power shower and very comfortable beds. The pub itself was traditional, historic and cosy and included a pool table and dart boards. Bring your own darts! The pub offers secure cycle storage. Our evening meal was home cooked and delicious- chosen from a varied menu of home cooked dishes including vegetarian options, offering a welcome contrast to the standard pub meals we’d had over the previous 5 days. Breakfast options included the Full English as well as smaller options which were all well prepared. We’d been cycling the Hadrian Cycle Way and Sea to Sea and this was our last stop, with a day’s cycle ahead. The Golden Lion was the discovery of the week. I recommend it 100% as a beautiful and historical pub, with very comfortable accommodation. We were impressed by the commitment and kindness of the owners who really want to ensure their clients enjoyed their stay. We had such a lovely time we’ll organise the next time we cycle the Sea to Sea so we can stay here again.

The hosts, Tyrone & Jennifer were warm, friendly and so kind! We had been cycling the Coast 2 Coast all day and were exhausted and couldn’t wait to get to our room. I left booking kind of late and all that was left was the Bothy room, which I wasn’t sure how we’d fit. To our delight, it was the perfect size for two cyclists. It was Spartan clean with the most comfortable beds & duvets & plenty of hot water for showers. (Tyrone kindly locked our bikes in a secure garage overnight - such a peace of mind!) After a shower and a nap, we went to their pub and ate delicious, home-cooked food that literally made me do a happy dance in my seat! I’m already thinking of planning a future trip to come back (maybe hiking this time).

Myself and my daughter were undertaking the coast to coast cycle challenge. We arrived in Weardale wet and tired after a full days cycling. We were received at the coach house with a fantastic warm welcome. It was exactly what we needed. Some lovely home cooked food in the attached pub on the evening (Golden Lion) and a cooked breakfast the next morning set us up for the final leg of our challenge. The hosts were very friendly and had local information about the route, which was really helpful. If we ever pass through Weardale again we would look to see them again.

We used this accommodation whilst hiking locally on the Weardale Way footpath between Killhope and Stanhope via Rookhope Moor, which took us two days. It saved us time travelling into and out of the area and was well worth the money. The food we were served was very tasty and Tyrone and his team were very welcoming. We understand the location and accommodation is very popular with tourists (both bikers and hikers) so we were not disappointed. Make the effort to go and visit Upper Weardale as you will not be disappointed.

Great location right on the C2C route, secure storage for cycles & motorbikes & close to Co op, a small cafe & bus stops for local transport links. Proper boozer with Pool table & music & good selection of draught beers & lagers. Tremendous value for money in comparison to other places, highly recommended for C2C riders & a perfect place for evening festivities after a day of cycling.
